Bon Jovi rock St Mary's with a Prayer

IT was one of the greatest performances I've seen at St Mary's in a long time.

Bon Jovi gave an on-pitch display Saints would have been rightly proud of - worthy of a title, not a relegation battle.

Well they are not known as the best live stadium band in the world for nothing.

But it was a fairly lack-lustre start by Bon Jovi standards as they began with two tracks from their latest album Lost Highway, supposedly the reason for this worldwide jaunt. That was until the ever energetic Jon gave the rest of the band a telling off for enjoying a vacation rather than preparation ahead of their first UK show in Southampton last night.

They knew just what the crowd wanted and from then on it was one classic after another from the back catalogue.

Keep the Faith,You Give Love a Bad Name, Runaway, It's My Life and Have a Nice Day were all there. But it was a medley including Bad Medicine and Livin on a Prayer which received the most rapturous reception from a vocal crowd.

They sandwiched an amazing version of Shout which was far better received than when it was performed by Lulu during Elton John's visit in 2005.

The crowd had enjoyed sunshine during the set of Southampton band HourstilAutumn, who opened for their heroes after winning a competition.

As the sun went down the forecast rain arrived. Very few minded though after a sexy Jon promised a shower for 35,000 people.

Bon Jovi are the returning heroes of two summers ago and their live shows are hard to beat.

Exceptional musicianship is fused with sensational stadium rock and a set to dazzle.

In and two-and-a-quarter hour show, which drew to a close with rousing encores of Always and Wanted Dead or Alive, Jon even managed to pay tribute to our local heroes.

He hoped for better future fortunes for the Saints.

Some might say that would be living on prayer but I will certainly keep the faith.

Bon Jovi: the poodle-rockers livin' on a 22-year-old prayer

Last Updated: 12:01am BST 13/06/2008

Jon Swaine reviews eighties rockers Bon Jovi in Southampton

One hour and 40 minutes into Bon Jovi's set, the spotlight fell on their eponymous frontman, Jon.

After his a cappella intro, the band finally launched into what is really their signature tune: Livin' on a Prayer. It was a powerful moment, but the visible relief of both the audience and the group that the wait for its soaring chorus was over told a larger truth: without it, probably none of us would have been there.

Because, since the song's release in 1986, the New Jersey four-piece have somehow coasted through 100 million album sales, never quite having recaptured the infectious essence it shared with You Give Love a Bad Name, another single co-written with Eighties poodle-rock impresario Desmond Child for the Slippery When Wet album.

And, while the patchiness of their subsequent output may not have been noticed when spread across 22 years, here, condensed into two hours, it could not be disguised.

The crowd may have diligently completed the chorus every time Jon offered his microphone, and swooned at every glimpse of his tightly-denimed backside. But it was hard to avoid the conclusion that his band were simply going through the motions.

Too many songs, such as Captain Crash, were plodding fillers, while Whole Lot of Leavin' and We Got it Goin' On were unfortunately fair representatives of their middling new album Lost Highway. Several others seemed not so much songs as three-minute slabs of power-chord introduction to an eight-bar Richie Sambora guitar solo.

There were certainly high points: Runaway and Bad Medicine were slick Eighties hits to rival Mötley Crüe, and Raise Your Hands, complete with a synth line spookily similar to Van Halen's Jump, was decent fun. With Jon shaking his maracas menacingly, Keep the Faith evinced some rare mystery and brooding from a group usually displaying fixed grins. But these peaks were interrupted by too many troughs.

One of the night's most interesting moments came during I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, when the band segued into Duffy's Mercy and the Rolling Stones' Start Me Up. The trouble is, covering one of the best pop songs of the year and one of the best rock-and-roll songs of all time inevitably reflects badly on the surrounding also-rans.

The lucrative tours and albums will go on every couple of years, but if Bon Jovi didn't already exist in 2008, there'd be no reason to invent them.

Bon Jovi at St Mary's, Southampton
David Sinclair

Now into their 25th year, Bon Jovi have kept the faith, or something close to it. More to the point, so have their fans. The New Jersey band's latest album, Lost Highway, has sold well in excess of three million copies and topped the charts around the world, while the accompanying tour, which began a year ago, has been a global blockbuster of even greater magnitude. Arriving in Southampton on the opening night of the UK stretch, the band were in typically ebullient form.

“Is anybody out there looking for a party?” sang Jon Bon Jovi, blithely ignoring the dark rain clouds glowering over the 35,000-strong crowd. Heads all shaking furiously, the band revved into the dance-rock riff of We Got It Going On. “We'll be bangin' and sangin' just like the Rolling Stones,” the singer promised.

And as good as his word, halfway through Sleep When I'm Dead, the band conjured up a verse of the Stones song Start Me Up, during which Jon Bon Jovi treated the crowd to an awkward, wedding-party impression of Mick Jagger's dance moves.

It was a curiously revealing moment, throwing Bon Jovi's own sense of theatre — or lack of it — into a somewhat unflattering focus. Very few bands have been able to function at this gargantuan level of activity over an extended period. But Bon Jovi have managed it for so long with so little fuss or pretension that it's spooky. Of course, the huge lighting rig and screen projections were expertly managed, while the band's playing and presentation were faultless throughout. But you would look in vain for any garish lasers, inflatables, hydraulic stunts or pyrotechnic displays.

Instead, their show was all about songs such as It's My Life and Keep the Faith — grand, classic-rock anthems shaped with a sleek, aerodynamic precision, building to choruses that released the tension like champagne corks popping. That and getting the all-important party happening, no matter what the distractions might be.

“It wouldn't be a Bon Jovi show without the rain,” the singer said, still beaming, as the first drops fell during the country-tinged Who Says You Can't Go Home. Luckily, it was just a light sprinkling, and spirits remained generally undampened as the band charged into the home straight with an emphatic run of Have a Nice Day, Bad Medicine and Living on a Prayer.

Tour dates: Hampden Park, Glasgow, June 21; City of Manchester Stadium, June 22; Ricoh Arena, Coventry, June 24; Ashton Gate, Bristol, June 25; Twickenham Stadium, London, June 27-28

Bon Jovi rock St Mary's

It was with effortless grace and little fanfare that Bon Jovi took to the stage for their first UK date of their Lost Highway tour at a packed St. Mary's stadium yesterday leaving the music to speak for itself.

No big intro was needed to herald the entrance of the ledgendry rock act as they calmly walked onto the stage from stairwell surfacing centre stage. Jon Bon Jovi sported a black leather jacket and black jeans beaming the whitest smile I've seen grace a stage and lost no time before kicking into the title track of their latest release.

Lost Highway is Bon Jovi's tenth studio album but it was back to the self-titled 1984 debut that they delved for one of my personal highlights, Runaway, with David Bryan's keyboards cutting through a warm but overbearing Southampton night. In between were a triplet of tracks that would get any Bon Jovi fan salivating; Born To Be My Baby, You Give Love A Bad Name and Raise Your Hands.

The Jon Bon Jovi / Richie Sambora collaboration still working well they shared the limelight in what was a well stage-managed performance. The backdrop featured a thousand lights with screens moving across the stage so the spectacle was visable from all sides of the stadium. Playing primarily in close proximity to centre stage both Jon and Ritchie each ventured to the flanks of the imposing platform only once which did evoke a somewhat 'going through the motions' mentality but that said it was done with passion, poise and shiny white teeth.

During I'll Sleep When I'm Dead Jon broke off into Duffy's Mercy declaring 'I just love that song' before taking the group into a brief taster of Stones classic Start Me Up. I'll Be There for You was delivered by Richie as Jon took a well earned rest before returning to deliver Blaze of Glory from his solo venture.

During Who Says You Can't Go Home the hanging clouds opened but gratefully not to any major degree, serving primarily to cool the excited mass who were showing their vocal appreciation of the show.

Livin' On A Prayer was always going to be the touchpaper moment of the night with 35,000 fans providing backing vocals, and more than a few air guitars pulled out for the magic moment. Richie's talk box effect, which mixes his voice and guitar into one signal, was pitch perfect as was drummer Tico Torres who also deserves a mention.

With that they departed the stage only to return minutes later with power ballad Always, followed by Any Other Day and finishing on Wanted Dead or Alive.

Having sold over one hundred and twenty million albums Bon Jovi look like a band still in there prime. In an 18 track extravaganza they chose a popular and well worked set list from their vast repertoire. They next visit these shores on July 21st at Hampden Park, Glasgow before stopping off at Manchester, Coventry, Bristol and Twickenham, be sure to catch them.
