Jun 25 2008 by Phil Vinter Jon Bon Jovi concert
Ricoh Arena, Coventry
HIS trademark mullet is sadly no longer with us, but incredibly at 46 Jon Bon Jovi still has more energy than a sugar-high seven-year-old on Christmas morning.
The evergreen New Jersey rock legend proved he has still got what it takes to whip up a slightly sombre cross generational crowd into a clapping, screaming frenzy of ‘we want more’ excitement when he performed at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena.
In fact the only sign that the now much more boringly coiffured front man is getting on a bit was in the early part of his set when he seemed to forget a few lines - the early signs of dementia according to Jon Bon!
The thousands who packed all three sides of the footballl stadium and most of the pitch area didn’t seem bothered as the band opened with the title track from their new album Lost Highway before going on to volley home a string of hits interspersed with tracks from the new album - Lost Highway.
With a massive back catologue of catchy global hip shakers stretching back to 1988 and Jon Bon Jovi’s showmanship and powerful voice, the group has all the ingredients needed to get a big stadium bouncing.
The screams for an encore at the end certainly suggested that there will be few fans unhappy they paid £75 a ticket.
After lively warm up performances by The Rich Boys and The Feeling, Jon Bon Jovi and his motley crew of long-haired rockers took to the stage at just after 8pm and didn’t budge for the following 135 minutes.
The stand out songs were, predictably the big hits… hat distinctive whining electric guitar riff from Blaze of Glory got heads swaying and there was near hysteria when It’s My Life was blasted out. Keep the Faith completed the tiplet of back to back hits.
The rocker showed his softer side when he pulled eight-year-old Jack on to the stage to accompany him with the ‘it’s alright’ bits in the song of the same name – his friends will never believe him at school today!
Verdict: 4/5

Rock gods Bon Jovi gave it big licks at the Ricoh Arena last night.
Making a very welcome return to the city the evergreen five piece from New Jersey had the 34,000 strong crowd punching the air and bouncing around within seconds of taking the stage.
Opening with the infectious Lost Highway they went on to give a whistle stop tour of their best work from the eighties through to the present day.
The atmosphere was electric with fans of all ages singing in unison to such timeless classics as You Give Love A Bad Name and Living On A Prayer.
There was also time for them to perform a Beatles medley that included Twist And Shout and Back In The USSR.
Pulling all the strings was charismatic front man Jon Bon Jovi who was dressed in his trademark skin tight black jeans and muscle top.
He urged everyone to get out of their seats and party while legendary axeman Richie Sambora thrashed around with his guitar and Tico Torres produced thunder claps and rumbling on the drums.
All in all it was a hugely entertaining night not least because the band was so ably supported by The Feeling and Richlife, who hail from Warwickshire.
Speaking after their once in a lifetime opportunity to open for the legendary American rockers, band member Richard Sharples, from Fenny Compton near Stratford, said: "It was fantastic seeing everyone join in and singing Back To You. It was awesome. We even hope to meet with Bon Jovi after the show."
The 18-year-old, who has just finished a music technology course at Warwickshire college, also hoped there were music industry big wigs in the crowd as the band is currently without a label.
