_________________ Listening to Bon Jovi makes me happy ! I Send This Song To You Wherever You Are As My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms |

Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday

The old building clings to life, awaiting the inevitable. Soon expensive construction equipment will swallow the rest of its seats, walls and echoes.
Most memories have already been drained, transferred out after Bruce Springsteen walked off stage last October. He closed the Giants Stadium songbook, pulling the plug on 32 years of music.
And yet, some memories linger …
"I guess the first time we played Giants Stadium was probably the first time we headlined a stadium, I imagine," Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora said during a conference call. "Hey T, is that right?"
"Yes," said Tico Torres, the band's drummer. "And that's when we had the ramp that went around the whole football field. It was a walkway ramp that, if you stood on one side of the stadium, it was by the next goalpost. Jon [Bon Jovi] would be way out there and actually … you guys ran all through that thing."
"Yes," Sambora said. "Basically we were like in midair. Basically we hung this ramp that came off the stage that went completely 100 yards and so Jon was able to go and get those people in the back of the stadium and sing to them. And then [Alec John Such] and I at the time we were on the side, so I was about on the 50-yard line. And we were hanging out in midair. Man, it was crazy. That thing was swaying too."
Twenty-one years later, with eight stadium appearances on the resume, Bon Jovi has been entrusted with bridging two eras, connecting the memories from the crumbling building on one side of the parking lot to the amplifiers inside the $1.6 billion building next door.
The group will open New Meadowlands Stadium this Wednesday, part of a three-show, four-night run that will christen a venue that has already booked Usher, U2 and the Eagles.
"It's home," Sambora said. "So I mean, every time you play New Jersey, that's the different preparation. I don't think there's going to be a big difference between playing the old Giants Stadium and the new Giants Stadium.
"You know, maybe Jon's banter might be a bit different, as far as how he approaches his monologues and what goes on in between songs and how grateful we are and thankful we are that we get to do this kind of stuff."
Adept at these red-carpet openings, the band has previously opened both the O2 Arena in London and the Nokia Theatre Times Square in Manhattan. Three years ago the band blasted open the doors to the Prudential Center in Newark, launching with a 10-day run. Jon famously walked on stage the first night there and proclaimed, "I'm the Jersey Devil and this is my new house!"
So now the Jersey Devil has a summer home. And these three shows (four, if you include the band's July 9 show at the stadium) promise to be a perfect centerpiece for the band's 2010 tour schedule.
"We have some crazy stuff," Sambora said. "We have some robots. We have robots that actually move the video screens around the stage. Pretty intense stuff. It's going to be a lot of fun, so come see us. It'll be spectacular, that's for sure."
Footage from the band's "Lost Highway" tour allowed them to put together "When We Were Beautiful," a Showtime documentary that aired last year. Sambora expects there will be more filming this tour that could land on a DVD down the road.
"I'm sure that the opening of [New Meadowlands] Stadium will be an event," Sambora said. "So I'm sure that we'll be filming some of this stuff." |
