Don't know how many times you've seen Bon Jovi? But for those keeping track, Wednesday's Bon Jovi concert was superior to their 2007 show at Xcel Energy Center. Why? Jon Bon Jovi seemed looser and less on autopilot. Some of the newer material added much-needed varied textures and flavors. And the staging, especiallly the variable video screens (using different configurations for almost every song) was cool w/o being self-consciously showy. The acoustic set on the semi-circle runway (in honor of The Circle Tour, no doubt) was relaxed and intimate. The smallish runway gave JBJ the ability to slap hands with the high rollers who paid to sit inside the circle. JBJ gave a couple short social-commentary-type speeches and he talked to Richie Sambora about seeing the "little purple guy," i.e. Prince, at their show 20-some years ago. But JBJ never gave the backstory or context to the 16,000 fans at the X (my estimate, though "official attendance" is 18,000, which is the figure I used in my review.). For the record, Prince invited Bon Jovi to Paisley Park for an after-party. There were enough flashbacks in Bon Jovi's 140-minute set, as it was. Big-budgets: Applebee's pours a ton of money into advertising, while Bon Jovi splurges on live video screens, which fascinatingly changed configurations on almost every song. Give a local shout-out: Every Applebee's honors area high schools. Bon Jovi had Twin Cities bands -- Select Three (Wednesday) and Fourforty (Thursday) -- open the X shows. Savvy business operators: Applebee's invariably has specials, promotions and other ways of hooking you. Jon Bon Jovi is an actor, philanthropist, political activist and businessman extraordinaire. His band offers inexpensive entry prices ($29.50) but then knows how to lure the well-heeled with up-close tickets for, gulp, $502 and $352. Free dessert: Sometimes that's the deal at Applebee's and on Wednesday, Jon Bon Jovi called for a little fun in the middle of "Bad Medicine" so the band broke into the Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" and then gave two extra reprises of the "Bad Medicine" chorus. That helped the meal go down. But there are at least two differences between these institutions. Under 550 calories: Applebee's has a special low-cal section on the menu, but, with Bon Jovi, nothing's under 550 calories. Their songs are too cheesy. Too many tunes are full-bore, fist-pumping anthems with supersized choruses. Repeat business: Would you eat at Applebee's two nights in a row? Bon Jovi promises to change the 23-song menu, er, set list, on Thursday, but you know it'll still be good-time music. And if it's as good as Wednesday, you'll be there for Bon Jovi.

What was it like meeting Bon Jovi? The first time we saw Bon Jovi was when we were invited to watch their sound check. No one was allowed to watch except us and our manager. That in itself, was an honor to witness the talent of these rock legends in our own private setting. They played four or five songs. Jon Bon Jovi spoke to us from the stage during their sound check and was joking with Brent about the notes he had made on our set list. After the show, Bon Jovi was kind enough to shake our hands, compliment us on our performance, and offer to take photos with us.
