Rating: * * *
American rock band Bon Jovi kicked off a 12-night residency at London’s O2 Arena this week, which will see them perform to more than a quarter of a million fans. Singer Jon Bon Jovi wasted no time letting the audience know what was expected. “Get up outta your seats,” he exhorted, pumping his fist. “This ain’t reality TV, baby! The only American idol you need to see is standing right here.”

The arrogance is probably meant to be charming, but he is right – he is almost the modern definition of an American idol, like a blow-dried Bruce Springsteen as designed by an A&R department after conducting a straw poll of women on a hen night.
My overwhelming impression from the front row is of hair and teeth. Even at 48, he is exceptionally handsome, and as perfectly proportioned as an Action Man doll. His black leather shirt is open and he moves with the deliberation of a mime student who has majored on rock posing. Bon Jovi fans are highly synchronised, hand-clapping on cue like extras in a Queen video. They join in lustily on extended codas of “Oh-oh-oh”s and “nah-nah-nah”s and “sha-la-la”s. At times, I feel like an atheist at a religious revival, the only one in a room of 23,000 not even halfway there, living on prayer.
I think it’s fair to say Bon Jovi are not a band who appeal to many critics. There is something inauthentic about them, almost a shamelessness in the way they appropriate bits of roots Americana, Springsteen-ish blue collar rock, 1980s LA glam metal and U2-style stadium anthems, with cheesy pop hooks and relentlessly upbeat self-help slogan choruses.
It’s like watching a routine based on the most effective elements from arena guitar music of the past 30 years, all channelled through Jon Bon Jovi’s forceful charisma. He has the purposefulness of a motivational guru, nodding and smiling and pointing into the darkness as if determined to personally connect with everyone in the room. There is nothing extemporaneous or haphazard about their performance. Even the jokey banter and little musical breakdowns (a burst of The Doors’ Roadhouse Blues in the middle of Bad Medicine) are carefully rehearsed.
Purely as pop rock entertainers, Bon Jovi are impossible to fault, particularly when the singer is riding a hydraulic lift and the band are working a squelchy bass and dirty guitar groove like We Got It Going On.
The set is dynamically structured, grand-standing yet intimate, with enough musical variety (including acoustic interludes and a cheerful solo spot for guitarist Richie Sambora) to keep things interesting while never straying too far from a big chorus.
But none of it feels real. When Jon Bon Jovi over- emotes through Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, with eyes shut and hands reaching up to the light, its feels less like an act of spiritual surrender than an audition for Simon Cowell.
