The O2 3.5/5
IN A NUTSHELL Crowd-pleasing American rockers return to The O2 for a 12 night residency, but don't quite scale the heights.

Round two of 12, according to frontman Jon Bon Jovi, but the American heavyweights couldn't quite deliver a knockout blow last night.
Back at the arena they opened in some style in June 2007 Bon Jovi gave a performance slicker than a BP oil spill, all spinning video screens, fist pumping anthems and (still) big hair.
But there was something slightly lacking - perhaps it was just the fact that the show, for all that it was well-produced and executed, just didn't quite have that spark of greatness.
dd-jun3-bonjovi.jpgNot that the 20,000 or so fans packed into The O2 were complaining. They came to commune with their heroes and they weren't disappointed.
That's what Bon Jovi are all about. Their concerts are less about the music - the band haven't had a worthwhile chart hit in the UK for years - and more about sharing an experience.
Singer JBJ was in fine voice all evening, and worked the crowd well, displaying all the stagecraft he's honed in over as quarter century of live performance.
Note-perfect throughout the band mixed their old hits with a clutch of songs from their latest album, The Circle.
While well-crafted the newer material lacked the impact the more familiar tunes have, something JBJ referred to himself when introducing Superman.
He said: "This was the last single off the album, but it wasn't a hit over here, so thanks for nothing record company."
Not that Bon Jovi really need to trouble the singles charts these days. Their albums shift in sufficient units to guarantee the middle-aged rockers need not worry about their dotages being anything other than gilded.
Those days look to still be some way off yet, with the veterans producing enough on-stage energy to power a small town, especially when they dipped into their extensive back catalogue.
Old favourites You Give Love A Bad Name, Born To Be My Baby and It's My Life all got an airing, whipping the crowd into an arm waving frenzy.
A particular highlight was Bad Medicine, into which they cleverly segued Rob Stewart's 1970s classic Hot Legs in a nod to the Scots rocker's appearance at The O2 last week.
Richie Sambora took vocal duties for Lay Your Hands On Me, but it was Bon Jovi himself who was the centrepiece of the show.
Occasionally the pace slackened, noticeably during an extended acoustic section, but generally things were kept rocking, underpinned by Tico Torres' pummelling drum rhythms.
The main set ended with a mean and moody Keep The Faith, and the faithful who didn't opt for an early exit were rewarded with an encore including Dead or Alive and Always.
Wrapping things up with hoary old classic Livin' On A Prayer meant the crowd left pumped with adrenaline. They enjoyed themselves, and it appeared the band did too.
Not quite as good as the show they put on to open The O2, but a pretty good effort nonetheless. No doubt Bon Jovi will keep the quality up for the remaining 10 dates. |
