Showbiz The Big Interview Jon Bon Jovi Shuns Wild Lifestyle Of 'Stupid' Stars
Jon Bon Jovi is holding court in a Û2000-a-night suite at the plush Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago.
In his worn jeans, T-shirt and scuffed biker boots he looks more like the hotel maintenance man than a pop superstar who's sold 120 million albums... but that's how down-to-earth Bon Jovi likes it.
He said: "I was a young boy when I first tasted stardom - all the decadence of being the cliched rock star was at my fingertips.
"So sure, I went out and bought the big house, big car and went to the pub and bought everyone a drink. I played the big shot - and the moron - for the first couple of years.
"But being grounded all came down to the fact I never left New Jersey. People there were not impressed by celebrity.
"They'd look at me and say: 'Enough of this bulls***. Just play the guitar or get the hell out.' "The stupidity of this generation, where you can be more famous for being a drug addict than for writing a great song, never appealed to me."
Over the years, I've spent many enjoyable hours in Jon's company. He's that rare breed - a rock legend totally unaffected by celebrity.
In recent years, the US mega-band have not had their troubles to seek.
Guitarist Richie Sambora is back on the road after a nightmare 18-month period in which he went through a painful divorce from former Dynasty star Heather Locklear and his dad died of cancer.
During this period, Bon Jovi incredibly managed to record their latest album, Lost Highway, in Nashville.
Jon, 46, said: "When I saw the hell Richie was going through the subject matter was right there in front of us. I thought it could be a way for Richie to get his mind off the death of his father and losing his wife."
To launch Lost Highway, Bon Jovi played a 10-night sell-out run at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey.
Diehard Bon Jovi fans were baffled by the group's change of direction.
Jon said: "I opened the show with Lost Highway by Hank Williams Snr. with pedal steel guitars and violins. You could have heard a bird f**t.
"The critics ripped the show to s***. The fans hated it. I thought, what? It's not like I broke into dance moves and had a rapper on stage with me.
"Lost Highway is not the biggest-selling record we've ever had but I like the music - that's what's important."
Jon has been happily married to his high school sweetheart, Dorothea Hurley, for 19 years.
They have four children - Stephanie Rose, 14; Jesse James Luis, 13; Jacob, five; and three-year-old Romeo Jon.
Jon told me: "I never had the constitution for drugs but there's rarely a night goes by where I don't have a nice bottle of wine after a show. I know my limits.
"There's something in the mind which makes you go one way or the other. I don't think anyone wakes up in the morning and says: 'I wanna stick a needle in my veins.'
"There's something which drives you there and I don't have that chip, thank God. Luckily Richie had friends who sat in a room with him and said: 'You're not leaving unless you go to a hospital.'
"But some guys live up to the old cliche of being the rock star with the bottle of Jack Daniels in their hand. Their band is s*** and they're getting their picture in the paper for all the wrong reasons."
Bon Jovi play Hampden Park in Glasgow on June 21. In their 25-year career, they've played 2500 gigs in 50 countries to 32 million people.
In the Windy City, I caught their show at the 25,000 capacity United Centre - home of the Chicago Bulls - and they were on top form.
Jon, Richie, keyboard player David Bryant and drummer Tico Torres powered through a two-and-a-half-hour set featuring classic hits such as You Give Love A Bad Name, Raise Your Hands, Livin' On A Prayer and Wanted (Dead Or Alive).
Jon said: "I'm like a boxer who's going all-out to win the title at the next gig. It keeps me hungry for playing live. If all I had to fall back on were memories I don't know what I'd do with myself.
"But I don't crave applause or attention, I don't need this. If necessary, I could totally change my life - do another movie or even just be a dad."
In 2004, Jon hit the US presidential trail campaigning for Democrat John Kerry.
He's also a close friend of former president Bill Clinton and wife Hillary - now slugging it out with Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination.
And he revealed: "I think I'm backing Obama.
You've got a 46-year-old black man from Illinois who wants to be President .
"Twenty years ago, if you had told me that would happen I'd have said you were full of s***.
"I think it's time for a young black man to be our nominee. There's a great energy and excitement around his innocence, romanticism and blind faith in people."
If Obama doesn't win the Democrat ticket is America ready for a female President?
Jon said: "I think that would be received very well. I love Hillary...I've known Mrs C a long time.
"I think our country has grown enough to realise you can't judge a person by the colour or their skin or their gender. Electing a president should be more about the content of their character." He added: "To have Barack or Mrs Clinton in there would send a heartfelt message and be a renewed attempt at trying to erase the scars of the last eight years."
Jon is delighted at the thought that his classic compositions will live on long after him. He said: "I don't know if people will still be playing my songs in 100 years time but, all vanity aside, we have written a handful of songs which have stood the test of time. Who'd have thought we'd achieve that?"
This summer, Jon and Richie will be inducted into the prestigious Songwriters' Hall of Fame.
Jon told me: "They only induct five people per year...and Richie and I are two of them.
"Previous inductees have included George Gershwin, Bob Dylan and Lennon and McCartney. But we can't go to the ceremony because we have a gig in Denmark that night.
"That's so typical of life in Bon Jovi - here's a pat on the back and a kick on the ass."

SHOF voters will have their work cut out for them. Nominees in the performer songwriter category include Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel and David Gates, along with such teams as Robert Lamm/James Pankow (of Chicago fame), Mick Jones/Lou Gramm (Foreigner) and John Densmore/Robby Krieger/Ray Manzarek/Jim Morrison (The Doors). Tom Petty and John Sebastian are in the running along with Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), and the Jon Bon Jovi/Richie Sambora team and Steve Winwood. 'This is one of the most competitive years I can remember,' commented SHOF Chairman/CEO and songwriter extraordinaire, Hal David. 'Over the past four decades, the SHOF has come to represent the legacy of the great popular song in all of its richness and variety, and, as a result, our voting members have never faced a more challenging ballot.' The organization, which is dedicated to recognizing the work and lives of those composers and lyricists who create popular music around the world, returns for its highly anticipated 39th annual induction and awards dinner, scheduled for Thursday, June 19th, 2008 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Each year, a Nominating Committee selects candidates for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Only writers who have been engaged in the profession for a minimum of 20 years and who have written an extensive catalog of hits are eligible. Once the candidates are determined, ballots are dispatched to the dues-current members of the Academy for their vote. The results of this process have yielded an impressive roster of candidates for induction in 2008. We have posted brief bios for each of them, and you are invited to have a look at history in the making! Click Here for the 2008 [Vous devez être inscrit et connecté pour voir ce lien]
