Semi-country Bon Jovi is totally irresistible

Any lingering concerns that Bon Jovi has gone Nashville were put to rest Tuesday night in front of 18,000 deliriously happy fans at the Xcel Energy Center.

The first of a two-night stand at the X to promote the band's country record, "Lost Highway," the splashy, high-energy show was just as much a country concert as, say, an evening with Kenny Chesney or Rascal Flatts. Which is to say, it wasn't really that country at all.

Sure, they had a violin/fiddle player on stage and, yeah, there was a bit of twang here and there. But then again, Jon Bon Jovi first claimed he was a steel-horse riding cowboy all the way back in 1986. The sing-along choruses and bumper-sticker sentiment of mainstream country fit the Bon Jovi formula so well because, really, there's not much difference between the two.

And Tuesday's performance was almost ridiculously entertaining. Campy? Yes. Silly? Absolutely. Irresistible? Totally. For a solid 145 minutes, Bon Jovi and company rolled out hit after hit after hit, from the current single "Whole Lot of Leavin' " all the way back to the band's 1983 breakthrough "Runaway."

Even the album tracks from "Lost Highway" sounded instantly familiar, like "We Got it Going On," a co-write with Big and Rich that's probably being used as the backing for a montage of sports clips at this very moment.

Bon Jovi remains one of the most compelling, and hammiest, frontmen of his era, and he's still fit enough to squeeze into sperm-killingly tight trousers.

(Folks with decent seats for tonight's encore performance should keep this in mind while watching JBJ in the flesh. The guy has achieved a silent-film era mastery of playing to the cameras, so much so that when you actually see him in person, as opposed to up on the big screens, his sweeping poses and melodramatic faces look a little ridiculous.)

Speaking of those screens, they ringed the stage and made all sorts of complicated, ping-ponging movements that allowed even those up in the cheap seats to gaze lovingly at Bon Jovi's dye job and pearly whites.

But even without all that technology, it's the band's music that continues to strike a chord with a mass audience. When the band closed the main set with 1987's "Livin' on a Prayer," thousands of women in push-up bras started jumping up and down with a lust I haven't seen at a show since watching those ladies' daughters lose their minds at the "Hannah Montana"/Miley Cyrus gig last fall.

"American Idol" vet Chris Daughtry proved the ideal opening act with his clutch of sometimes angst-y, sometimes inspiring radio hits with names like "What About Creed?" and "Feels Like Tonight (I'll Wax My Chest Again)." Well, that's what they should be called, anyway.
