Le succès de LH a été une surprise, l'interactivité avec le public grâce au I Love My Town Contest, casser 4 cymbales par concert, passer à autre ch après la tournée etc ...

With more than 120 million albums sold and concerts in 50 countries before 32 million-plus fans during two decades, Bon Jovi did not exactly expect to set the music world on fire with its latest release.

With special guest Daughtry. 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa. $42.50-$132.25. (813) 301-2500; stpetetimesforum.com.

For many bands as accomplished as Bon Jovi's crew, it's usually time to pull out the greatest hits catalog, play a few new originals to prove rust hasn't set in creatively and share in the adulation of longtime fans.

For Bon Jovi, however, the unforeseen success of 2007's "Lost Highway" propelled the band on a world tour that is linking long- standing fans with these attitude-adjusted New Jersey rockers and introducing them to new ones. That tour brings them to the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa on Sunday night.

"It's a wider demographic," longtime drummer Tico Torres said from a tour stop in Los Angeles. "The success of the album came to us as a surprise. It happened to click and hit the heartbeat of a lot of people in the world."

The CD resonated primarily because of the energetic "I Love This Town." It has connected so much that the band has set up an eponymous contest that involves fans creating and uploading their own videos to bonjovilovesmytown.com. Entries are judged to win concert tickets and compact discs.

Its interactive method of working with fans is nothing new for Bon Jovi. It relied on fan input in 1988 to produce the "Bad Medicine" video that helped push it to No. 1.

From his perspective keeping the back beat, Torres said the contest has created a frenzy in each city since the band opened this tour with a 10-night stand at Newark's Prudential Center's grand opening.

"I watch the reaction, and it's something else to watch," he said. "They see something about themselves or their town, really special, that makes the show theirs. The fact that they have a part in it, I think, is important."

Equally important logistically for the 38-city U.S. tour as it ends next week in Atlanta is productive use of instruments and effects. Jon Bon Jovi figures he uses five Fender and Takamine guitars, according to statistics from the band. That pales in comparison to the 24 electric and acoustic models Richie Sambora plays during each show.

Torres chuckled at those figures, since he breaks an average of 4 drumsticks each night, down from 16. Even more impressive to him is the 9 miles of cable and 4 venetian blind screens suspended onstage that are operated backstage to bring together choreography of video imaging and sound through 155 speakers.

"We try to do something that's never been done before," he said. "A metamorphosis goes on song by song without it being so daunting it takes away from the music."

The music, Torres said, is tighter than ever because of the band members' familiarity. The result is a broader audience that ranges from 8 to the late 60s.

Can Bon Jovi hit it again with another CD after Atlanta and six weeks touring Europe? Torres said the band will need a breather to regroup before any new material is developed.

Until then, the tour is all.

"When we get done, we'll need a break," he said. "You can bring some stories back to the table. You need to get away from it to be able to do that."
