When families wanted to spend time together 20 years ago, they piled in the car and went to Disneyland, or maybe sat around and played board games.
Today, they go see Bon Jovi.
Almost 17,000 pre-school to senior-discount aged fans piled into a sweltering Sommet Center Thursday night for two-and-a-half hours of non-stop, fist-pumping, sing-along-at-the-top-of-your-lungs rock ’n’ roll. And Bon Jovi delivered just that, eventually.
The show kicked off with “Lost Highway,” the title cut from the band’s latest CD, and then moved on to “Born to Be My Baby,” and “You Give Love a Bad Name.” It seemed the band and crew spent the first handful of songs acclimating to the Nashville stage, fine-tuning the sound mix and really gearing up for the long night ahead of them.
By the fourth song, “Raise Your Hands,” the band hit its stride, frontman Jon Bon Jovi, clad in a leather jacket and largely unbuttoned sleeveless black shirt, whipping the crowd into an arm-waving frenzy.
Through a haze of sweat, the band soldiered through a deluge of hits from the last two decades, including “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead,” “In These Arms” and a crowd-pleasing “Blaze of Glory.” Not much was said in the way of conversation from the stage, but Jon Bon Jovi engaged fans with winning smiles, shouts of encouragement and boundless energy.
The group also employed various massive LCD screens to further cement its connection with the audience — a more complicated feat for this tour than in past productions. For the first time, Bon Jovi’s show is in the round, with seats filled even on the backside of the stage. The screens — four of which were in near constant motion, splitting, spinning, sliding and even splintering — often carried various angles of stage footage ensuring that regardless of seat location, everyone could see the action.
And no one missed a thing — especially the surprise guests. About halfway through the evening, Bon Jovi introduced his “country cousins” to thunderous applause, and Big & Rich took the stage.
“The four of us (Jon, Richie Sambora, Big Kenny Alphin and John Rich) got together a little more than a year ago and knocked this thing out in 15 minutes,” Bon Jovi said before launching into “We Got It Going On.” “We had so much fun.”
And the sold-out crowd approved, cheering noticeably louder than it had all night.
“You can’t have more fun than that with your clothes on,” Jon Bon Jovi said after the song. “How am I going to follow that?”
The band followed with “It’s My Life,” and once again, the audience exploded in fist-pumping sing-a-long glee that continued through “Bad Medicine.”
Bon Jovi then took a break and Sambora assumed lead vocals on “I’ll Be There For You,” with Bon Jovi re-emerging in the audience to sing “(You Want to) Make a Memory.” After that, LeAnn Rimes joined the group on stage to perform “Till We Ain’t Strangers Anymore.” The night wrapped in the next six songs, but even as the show was winding down, the band — and Jon’s voice — was still gaining momentum. An a cappella start to “Livin’ on a Prayer” propelled the audience into one of the most inspired sing-a-longs of the night.
“And that’s why I keep coming back to Nashville,” Bon Jovi said at the song’s conclusion. The show ended with encore performances of “I Love This Town” and “Wanted Dead or Alive.”
Bon Jovi’s voice was spot on the entire night. And while the band does bear his name, it was apparent they are a team, a well-oiled machine that pumps singable anthems led by one of the most dynamic frontmen in the business. Much has been said about why Bon Jovi is able to transcend its 1980s peer group, but it all comes down to sheer talent and the unwavering ability to stay current. These men have both and their live show puts it on display for thousands every night. |
